Classical Singers' Workshop Series: Art Song
Master the classical sound and adapt it to art song
This practical and inspirational workshop will help you to master the classical sound and adapt it to singing art song, a fantastic style of classical singing great for developing your own personality.
We will do this in the context of Estill Voice Training, a revolutionary vocal development program that offers classical singers unique, precise tools to continuously balance, modify and control their voices throughout their career.
Led by professional opera singer and voice teacher Stefan Holmström, it is a safe space for learning and experimentation with opportunities for individual coaching throughout the session. With a working singer’s experience of performing art song for many different audiences in both traditional and unexpected venues, Stefan will share his passion for art song and experience as a performer and musician, including practical advice on sound, phrasing and acting.

3-part Classical Singers' Workshop Series
As part of an overview of the Estill Model, we will identify and explore the vocal structures that play an important role in classical singing. This will give you a deeper understanding of how your voice works and how you can produce a sound that’s appropriate for art song.
With extreme control of dynamics and light/dark balance of the tone you can tell the most emotional stories ever written and set to music. There is a nakedness in this style, there are no bells and whistles, just your voice and the piano.
Before the workshop, participants will need to learn one or all of four sections of art songs which we will use throughout the session to put into practice the tools we will explore.
The songs are:
-
Quilter, Now sleeps the crimson petal
-
Brahms, Feldeinsamkeit (first 8 bars)
-
Schubert, An die Musik (first verse)
-
Fauré, Chanson D’Amour (first 29 bars)
You can sing the songs in any key that is comfortable for you. Sheet music will be emailed to you after you have registered.

About Estill Voice Training
Estill Voice Training (EVT) is a scientific, evidence-based system for vocal development. It is a life-changing approach that can help you become a stronger and more emotional performer by giving you effective tools to improve your craft. With EVT, simple everyday sounds are used to identify structures in the larynx and in the vocal tract (i.e. throat, mouth and nose). These are then trained in detail to give conscious, predictable and reliable control of your voice.
It offers speakers and singers solutions to realise their full vocal potential (e.g. overcoming breaks in the voice, controlling dynamics and vibrato, increasing range, belting safely and more). It’s a scientific approach with emphasis on training structures of the voice in isolation for maximum artistic freedom.
