Estill Movie Night
Advanced Workshop in Visible Anatomy
This advanced workshop is open to anyone who has completed at least one Estill Level 1 & 2 Course. We will be viewing The Role of the Soft Palate in Laryngeal Function and in Selected Voice Qualities, a research project from 1989.
As “Estillians”, we know that the velum and velo-pharyngeal port can be controlled voluntarily; however, this concept is not always recognized in the wider world of voice.
Dr. Yanagisawa and Jo Estill give us a LOT to think about and absorb in this 11 minute video that "(documents) the activity of the soft palate in normal laryngeal functions and the independence of the palate from the activity of the larynx and aryepiglottic sphincter." This video touches on breathing, effort closure, swallowing, phonation, laughing, whistling and voice qualities – with a few previews of “coming attractions” (observations featured in subsequent research videos).
It takes time and experience to understand what you are looking at in any endoscopic video of the larynx. Throughout this video there are simultaneous views of both the larynx and the velo-pharyngeal port adding to the challenge. We will have plenty of time for “instant replays” and “time outs” to deepen understanding of this complex physiology and to answer any questions you may have.

Stefan Holmström, EMCI, will facilitate the session. Mary McDonald Klimek, EMCI-ATP SD. will be your commentator and guide. Mary’s first course with Jo Estill was early in 1990. The ‘endoscopy day’ in that course changed her life. Not long after, she became a research subject in the videos that followed the video we will be watching, and is prepared to answer the question, “So how does it feel to have a rigid scope in one side of your nose while a “flex” is in the other?”
If this workshop is cancelled for any reason, there will be a complete refund of fees paid.
