Sing and Speak without Strain

Practical skills for clear, comfortable voicing

Top of page

Scratchy, croaky, pressed or choked voicing may be an indication of strain. Vocal strain occurs when there is too much effort in the larynx. It can be caused by poor posture, tension, over-breathing or simply trying too hard.

However, it doesn’t have to be this way. When effort is at the right level and in the right place, voicing feels easy.

This practical workshop is all about efficient voicing. You’ll get to know your true and false vocal folds and begin to train them consciously with Estill Voice Training

Conscious, independent control of the true and false vocal folds is invaluable for safe voicing without scratching. It will also help you to access your full dynamic range and improve breath control.

The workshop is a safe space for exploration with some opportunities for individual coaching throughout the session (but there's no pressure to participate!). There will be opportunities to ask questions.

Estill Voice Training offers speakers and singers solutions to realise their full vocal potential (e.g. overcoming breaks in the voice, controlling dynamics and vibrato, increasing range, belting safely and more). It’s a scientific approach with emphasis on training structures of the voice in isolation for maximum artistic freedom.

About Estill Voice Training

Estill Voice Training (EVT) is a scientific, evidence-based system for vocal development. It is a life-changing approach that can help you become a stronger and more emotional performer by giving you effective tools to improve your craft. With EVT, simple everyday sounds are used to identify structures in the larynx and in the vocal tract (i.e. throat, mouth and nose). These are then trained in detail to give conscious, predictable and reliable control of your voice.

About the trainer

Stefan Holmström, MFA and Estill Master Trainer (EMT), is a professional opera singer and voice teacher. Following a career performing at Glyndebourne, Grange Park Opera, Opera Holland Park and as a member of the Phantom of the Opera Company at Her Majesty's Theatre in London, Stefan offers expert vocal training and workshops to a wide range of singers and speakers from his studio in central Brighton. He has also taught at the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts and at Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London.
