Vocal workshops

Opera singer, voice teacher and Estill Master Trainer (EMT) Stefan Holmström offers interactive vocal workshops and Estill practice groups that give people the opportunity to focus on one vocal structure or voice quality at a time. These are safe spaces to explore, experiment and have fun while learning - it’s not about being perfect!

Estill workshops and practice groups with Stefan are fun, supportive and playful. Most sessions are open to anyone who would like to learn more about improving their voice with EVT, though Estill practice groups are reserved for people who have previously completed an Estill Level 1 or 2 course.

The workshops and practice groups are delivered online via Zoom and typically last anywhere from 90 minutes to 4 hours depending on the course.

"I am a trained singing teacher, but I left this workshop with MANY new ideas and exercises, as well as a renewed desire to sing myself and to work with my choirs. Back home again, I have used what Stefan taught me at every choir rehearsal. I would warmly recommend a workshop with Stefan!"

Vocal workshops

Vocal workshops are deep dives into particular structures of the voice. They are opportunities to upskill in a fun, practical and supportive way. Some workshops topics include:

  • False Vocal Folds: learning to control these will help you with clear tone. It will also take out strain and make your voice use safe.
  • True Vocal Folds: controls dynamics, colours - and breath!
  • Tongue: a big, strong muscle that is essential for clear diction, but also gets involved in voice production and causes problems.
  • Velum: also known as the soft palate, it's an amazing magic muscle for singing, but can be hard to feel! Through Estill Voice Training, you can become aware of it and see for yourself how it transforms your sound.
  • Speech: for pop, folk, jazz and musical theatre.
  • Sob: for crooners and classical singing. Learn how to sing high and soft.
  • Belt: very exciting and very loud! Used in pop, gospel, musical theatre, and on the stage. Learn to do it safely with Estill Voice Training.

Estill Voice Training and how can it help you

Estill Voice Training (EVT) is an evidence-based system for vocal development. It is a life-changing approach that can help you become a stronger and more emotional performer by giving you the tools to improve your craft. Simple everyday sounds are used to identify structures in the larynx and in the vocal tract (throat, mouth and nose). These are then trained in detail to give conscious, predictable and reliable control of your voice. Knowing how to produce exactly the sound you want gives freedom and also helps to ease anxiety around performing. The voice is divided in to 13 structures which are trained in control exercises called figures. The 13 figures are then combined into 6 distinct voice qualities: speech, falsetto, twang, sob, opera and belt. Working on the Estill structures helps you solve many vocal problems, including:

  • Thyroid Cartilage
    • overcome breaks in your voice
    • access your full range
    • vibrato control
    • learn to sing really softly
  • False Vocal Folds
    • sing and speak without strain, cultivate clear tone
    • vocal recovery, learning to use your voice in a sustainable way
    • use effects like distortion safely
  • Larynx
    • become a voice over artist!
    • sing both high and low pitches easily
    • learn to use twang and maximise projection
    • switching genre; learn to move effortlessly between pop, musical theatre and classical
  • Tongue
    • beat tongue root tension
    • let the audience actually understand your words!
    • exercises for unfamiliar languages
EVT also looks at performing in three separate areas: craft, artistry and performance. This allows for accurate problem-solving and an efficient process for you to develop to a more confident artist.

Estill practice groups

Estill practice groups with Stefan are fun, intensive sessions that cover the 13 Estill Figures for Voice and/or the 6 Estill Voice Qualities over several weeks. Aimed at those who have already completed an Estill Level 1 & 2 course, the practice groups can help build your skills quickly, allowing you to incorporate Estill Voice Training more confidently into your artistry or teaching. The work we do in this group could also form an important part of your preparation for an EFP or EMT exam. Practice groups are a wonderful opportunity to learn by both doing and listening to others. Groups have a maximum of 10 participants. Each 90 minute session includes physiological and acoustic reviews, intensive training with expert guidance and feedback, individual coaching of the figure or voice quality and practical applications to singing and speaking.
